Returning to the Codex Selden, this picture shows Lord 9 Lizard's marriage to Lady 12 Deer. Marriage scenes typically show the bride and groom facing and gesturing to each other while seated on a woven reed mat. There are a number of Mixtec metaphors for marriage recorded in sixteenth-century lexical sources, and these can help to explain codical imagery. One such expression was: cuvui huico yuhui ya "there is a royal celebration of the woven mat" The depiction of bride and groom on a woven mat is thus a literal imaging of a verbal expression.(3)
